WINDOW SHUTTERS

In the past every house had shutters. Nevertheless, in the last decades these have almost lost in oblivion. In the 90s ,venetian blinds and roller blinds were gaining ground. The fate of the trusty old shutters seemed sealed. However, they experienced a comeback on account of an increased interest in traditional architecture regarding single-family houses. .

In the countries in which the sun shines much stronger than in our regions, shutters protect the rooms above all against warmth. The windows which are sealed in the afternoon by shutters, are a usual sight in southern European countries. In our climate zone shutters have another purpose. They form an additional protection against thermal loss from the inside rooms, they protect against cold gusts of wind and draft. That's why they are useful at night and in winter. Shutters protect the building also against the penetration of undesirable "guests" if the house owners are asleep or are not at home. In addition, they also provide sound insulation.

Window shutters and roller blinds

All the above mentioned purposes also accomplish exterior roller blinds. Unfortunately, these do not have the same aesthetics as shutters. A major importance is the place of installation of the shutters or roller blinds. Roller blinds can be excellently combined with windows in buildings with modern architecture. But where we have a house in the traditional style, shutters show an aesthetically better  advantage. Although roller blinds are maybe less charming, their functionality cannot be denied; they likewise guarantee comfort and protection. Whether choosing shutters or roller blinds, it depends on the requirements of the customer. If he chooses, however, shutters, it can in general be a problem to buy them. Shops and manufacturers in Poland still pay little attention to shutters. Increasingly they can be found however in window carpenter's workshops; namely from all materials available on the market: wood, PVC and aluminum.

Tradition und Presence

In the past shutters were installed on the walls or window case from the outside or inside of the building. Exterior shutters opened towards the outside, interior shutters towards the inside. Each type of installation had its advantages. Interior shutters save space and can be additionally folded to half, almost like folding doors. There are also interior shutters, which can be folded on horizontal guidances, which are mounted on the window case. Interior shutters guarantee a level of greater safety and also protect better against thermal loss. Exterior shutters protect better against the impact of limbs, hail, and strong wind and in addition they decorate the front.

From wood

Wood is still the most popular material for the construction of shutters. Wooden shutters have a similar construction to door wings. There are two types:

The simplest type are called boarded shutters, which are made out of wooden boards. Their surface consists in this case of boards with a thickness of 2,5‒3 cm tightly pressed together or grooved on the front side. They are connected by two or three dovetail battens, which are strengthened by shores. These rustic window shutters can be made by our own or be ordered at a window carpenter. They are mounted on hinges on the wall and locked by a hook or bolt. To guarantee a maximum of safety the upper dovetail batten should end exactly beneath the window lintel.  This makes  prying open impossible.

More complicated are window shutters with a frame. Once they were made out of solid wood, today 3-layered plywood panels are used.  The wooden frame functions as framework, which guarantees the needed stiffness. Between this window shutters we distinguish between boarded profile shutter, louvered shutters, frame and panel shutters and plain boarded shutter. Those have different fillings

In boarded profile shutters, a one or two-sided batten casing is mounted.  The groins are nailed or screwed diagonal or louvered-like to the frame. The inner surface is covered with vertical panels.

Louvered shutters have a frame filling in the form of horizontal battens which are applied at an angle of 45°, hereby they do not limit the incidence of light into the room completely. The more complex variant of these shutters disposes of a mechanism in every wing, which allows controlling the inclination of the louvers.
In frame and panel shutters, the frame filling is split in smaller parts through horizontal and vertical battens, so called, so-called sash bars. The space between the bars is filled with panels.

In plain boarded shutters the space between the frame is filled with a panel or from both sides with wooden strips, joined in an interval of 2-3 cm through water-resistant glue.  All those window shutters are normally installed on the window case.

The hardware ‒hinges, bolt, locks – guarantees a maximum of security, looks good and is easy to handle. Available also is hardware in which we can open or close the shutters without having to open the window, e.g. through worm drive and crank. For the finishing of the shutters. different varnish, stains and enamel colors can be used. Available are treated as well as untreated shutters.
